Training

“I Don’t Know Where To Start.” Here’s What I Tell People.

It’s probably the most common thing I hear from new clients.

“I know I need to do something.”

“I know I’ve let things slide.”

“I just don’t know where to start.”

And honestly, I get it.

When you’ve spent years putting work, family and everyone else first, improving your health can feel overwhelming.

There are diets.

Apps.

Gym memberships.

Supplements.

Personal trainers.

YouTube videos.

Podcasts.

And about a million opinions telling you what you should be doing.

No wonder people feel stuck.

The good news?

You don’t need to fix everything at once.

Start Smaller Than You Think

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to overhaul their entire lifestyle overnight.

They decide they’ll exercise six days a week.

Cut out sugar.

Stop drinking.

Track every calorie.

And somehow become a completely different person by next Monday.

It works for about ten days.

Then real life gets in the way.

And they conclude they lack willpower.

In reality, they simply tried to do too much.

I’d much rather see someone exercise twice a week for the next five years than train six days a week for a month and then quit.

Forget Perfect. Focus On Consistent.

Career-driven people are often their own worst enemies when it comes to health.

They’re used to succeeding.

They work hard.

They’re disciplined.

And they assume health works the same way.

More effort.

More discipline.

More intensity.

Except health doesn’t really work like that.

After more than 11 years as a personal trainer in Auckland CBD, I’ve found that the people who get the best results aren’t necessarily the people who work the hardest.

They’re the people who keep showing up.

Consistency beats intensity.

Every time.

If I Was Starting Again, Here’s What I’d Do

If I’d completely fallen off track, I wouldn’t try to do everything.

I’d focus on four things.

  • Walk every day.
  • Strength train two or three times a week.
  • Eat protein with each meal.
  • Get to bed a little earlier.

That’s it.

No detoxes.

No cleanses.

No cutting out carbs.

No extreme diets.

Simple things.

Done consistently.

Motivation Is Overrated

People often think they need more motivation.

I don’t think they do.

Motivation comes and goes.

Life gets busy.

Work gets stressful.

Kids get sick.

Holidays happen.

The people who succeed aren’t the people who stay motivated.

They’re the people who keep going when motivation disappears.

That’s one reason I believe habits matter far more than motivation.

It’s also why I focus so much on behaviour change with clients.

You Are Not Starting From Scratch

You’re starting from experience.

You know what doesn’t work.

You know you can’t survive on chicken and broccoli.

You know you don’t want to spend two hours a day in the gym.

You know life is unpredictable.

That’s not failure.

That’s useful information.

The goal isn’t to find the perfect plan.

The goal is to find a plan you can stick to.

Lower The Bar

This might sound strange coming from a personal trainer.

But I think most people need to lower the bar.

Not raise it.

Trying to be perfect is exhausting.

Trying to be good enough is sustainable.

And sustainable wins.

Average, repeated week after week, beats perfect followed by nothing.

Every single time.

So Where Should You Start?

Start with something.

Anything.

Go for a walk.

Do ten minutes of exercise.

Book a session.

Join a gym.

Prepare tomorrow’s lunch.

Go to bed thirty minutes earlier.

Don’t worry about doing everything.

Just start.

Because you don’t need the perfect plan.

You just need a place to begin.
